The Longines Avigation BigEye draws on a rare 1930s pilot’s chronograph discovered in the brand’s archives, admired for its oversized minute counter and clean, high-contrast dial. Its reissue caught attention by winning the Revival Prize at the 2017 GPHG, making it a standout in Longines’ Heritage lineup and a compelling alternative to costlier vintage aviation chronographs. Collectors appreciate the model’s faithful styling, with distinctive pump pushers and a domed sapphire crystal that evoke its prewar inspiration.

The primary reference, L2.816.4.53.2, features a 41mm stainless steel case, matte black dial, and blue-glowing Super-LumiNova. The watch is powered by the caliber L688 (a column-wheel automatic based on the ETA A08.L01), offering a smooth chronograph action and 54-hour power reserve. Price variation comes down to condition, completeness (box and papers), and dial variants—note that a titanium-cased blue dial version was released later, typically commanding a premium over the original black dial steel model.

When considering the Avigation BigEye, examine the crispness of the case lines and the clarity of the domed crystal—polishing and scratches can affect value. Early examples with full accessories are most desirable, especially from the initial release. The model’s popularity has led to strong secondary market demand, but there are no widespread issues with counterfeits or aftermarket parts, so focus on condition and provenance to secure the best example.
